As mentioned before, kava (Piper Methysticum) is an herbal powder made from the roots of the kava plant. After a few years the plant is harvested and the roots are cleaned, placed in the sun for drying, and then ground into powder. This kava powder is made into the kava beverage that is so calming and relaxing! The kava plant itself is a large shrub that can reach heights of 10 ft.-15 ft. and has green heart shaped leaves; the stems can be solid green, solid red/black, striped or spotted. Kava seems to be a new thing, when did people start using it? About 3000 years ago a wild form(Piper Wichmanii)of the kava plant was domesticated in the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu. From there it spread with people as they traveled and settled new islands. Most Pacific Island settlers of the time carried all their possessions with them, including important food plants, when they traveling. Though kava may have been available in small quantities in health food stores near you for years, only recently has kava received national TV and Press coverage in the USA and other countries. How was kava used traditionally? "'Awa[kava] was used principally as a narcotic to induce relaxation and sleep. In historic times it has been used by all classes of people, especially fisherman, farmers, hunters, and the like whose strenuous work left them stiff and taut with fatigue...The distinction between the 'awa[kava] drinking of the ali'i [Hawaiian chiefs] and commoners was one of manner and purpose of using the drink. The ali'i class drank for pleasure largely, the kahuna[priestly] class ceremonially, and the working people for relaxation after labor."(Native Planters in old Hawaii. Handy and Handy; Bishop Museum Press; Honolulu, Hawaii 1972. Pg. 193). Go to our Kava Ceremony page to learn a basic kava ceremony. What is kava used for today? Kule'a Farm Traditional Kava Powder has been prepared from the dried roots of the kava plant - the way that kava is prepared in the Polynesian islands of the S. Pacific today! Traditionally the kava beverage has been prepared in two ways: 1)the fresh root was chewed, grated or pounded and then mixed with liquid or 2) the root was dried and then pounded, ground or grated into a powder and then mixed with liquid. Some pills and extracts have fillers, have been combined with other ingredients or have been adulterated in other ways. Our kava is not encapsulated, extracted or otherwise adulterated! Nothing is added or taken away. We'll be honest with you - while many of our customers have told us that they have tried the pills, etc most of them have preferred the effects of our Traditional Kava Powder. Drink the Traditional way! - Drink Kule'a Farm Traditional Kava Powder - It Takes You Where You Want To Go Why is the strainer bag for? The kava powder is a coarse powder, not as fine as flour, so the strainer bag filters out all the coarse kava particles while allowing the fine powder to diffuse into the water. We learned to prepare kava in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and we promote the method used in those countries (we figure that after drinking kava for so long they must have developed a pretty good method).
